BRITISH COLONIAL NASSAU
The British Colonial Nassau is a historic landmark with a storied past. Originally built in 1901, the Colonial Hotel was a grand wooden structure that tragically burned down in 1922. Rebuilt as The New Colonial in 1924, it quickly became a symbol of luxury and resilience. In 1932, it was renamed the British Colonial Hotel, cementing its status as a cornerstone of Bahamian hospitality. Over the decades, the hotel has undergone multiple ownerships, transformations, and renovations. Second Wave was brought in to help reimagine the new British Colonial while honoring its rich legacy and cultural significance.

THE CHALLENGE
TRADITION AND LUXURY REDEFINED
British Colonial Nassau, a historic hotel with over a century of rich heritage, faced the challenge of balancing its legacy with the expectations of modern travelers. The hotel had to reinvigorate its brand identity to resonate with both local and international audiences, establish itself as a distinctive Bahamian destination amid competitive resorts, and embrace its storied past while integrating contemporary elegance and comfort. This effort required a holistic approach to redefine the hotel’s positioning, visual identity, and guest experience.
THE CONCEPT
A TIMELESS NASSAU HAVEN
The rebranding of British Colonial Nassau centered on blending historical elegance with modern indulgence. Spaces were designed to feel timeless yet approachable, featuring botanical prints, textured materials, and airy layouts that reflected the charm of colonial style while embracing contemporary luxury. The brand narrative celebrated the hotel’s legacy through design and storytelling, with visual elements like flamingos and palms symbolizing the vibrant Bahamian spirit. On-property experiences were curated to immerse guests in local culture, from Junkanoo-inspired events to authentic Bahamian cuisine. This holistic approach positioned the hotel as a sanctuary of refined relaxation and cultural richness, seamlessly connecting its storied past to the desires of today’s travelers.
VISUAL LANGUAGE
MODERN BRITISH COLONIAL DESIGN
The visual identity of British Colonial Nassau was meticulously crafted to reflect the hotel’s rich heritage and contemporary elegance. The logo design incorporated elements like flamingos and palm fronds, nodding to Bahamian culture and the natural beauty of the islands, while the diamond shape symbolized hidden treasures and timeless sophistication. A refined color palette of Caribbean blues, soft golds, natural greens, and sandy neutrals evoked the lush surroundings and tranquil waters of Nassau. Typography paired classic serif fonts with modern touches, striking a balance between tradition and innovation. Across signage, collateral, and marketing materials, the visual language conveyed a sense of warmth, authenticity, and stately charm, reinforcing the hotel’s position as both a cultural landmark and a modern retreat.
